The Effect of Mood on Work Performance

Mon, 04/20/2009 - 04:43

This is a guest post by Ksenija of Unusual Business Ideas . American scientists have finally proved a widespread opinion that nothing effects the productivity of our work more than mood. Nancy Rothbard from Warton University of Pennsylvania and Stephanie Wilk from Fischer College of Business in Ohio investigated the work of call-center employees from different US states. During 3 weeks, Rothbard and Wilk were studying their behavior and changes in mood depending on the situation at workplace.

FOREIGN MINISTRY FAULTS UK, US VISA POLICIES

Mon, 04/20/2009 - 04:41

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Joe Keshi, weekend described as humiliating the visa policies of the British and US embassies in Nigeria. “First of all, asking us to bring our bank statement and all sorts of unthinkable documents is very humiliating. It is becoming increasingly frustrating the way they treat Nigerians and they also engage Nigerian government officials in the most humiliating processes,’’ Keshi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on

Skiing and Sushi

Mon, 04/20/2009 - 04:36

You know you live in California when you can take your cross-country ski gear out for a whirl and then stop for a picnic of sushi. We were up in the mountains last week for Spring Break visiting my sister–in-law who lives in South Lake Tahoe . The weather was perfect; about 35 degrees and alternately sunny and snowy. Folks were cycling around Lake Tahoe in their shorts and we headed up to 8000 feet near Kirkwood to ski in full winter regalia; long underwear, ski pants, hats, gloves and tons of

Mon, 04/20/2009 - 04:35

Sorake and Lagundri beaches are located in southern Nias about 12 km from Teluk Dalam. These two beaches (with the length of 4 km) face each other. Along the white sandy beaches grow a lot of coconut trees that make them look more attractive. This place is the best in the world to surf because of its excellent huge waves. Every year, international surfing competitions take place here. They are well-attended by surfers from Bali, Australia, Hawaii, Japan, and other countries. Sorake Beach is l

Earth Hour 2009 Started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour quickly grew into a global observance. More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions. Collected here are a series of before-and-after photographs - which (starting with the second one

Brian Visits the 2009 FX International Convention

Mon, 04/20/2009 - 04:18

It was my first voyage to the FX International Convention, an enormous event in Orlando that brings out considerable crowds to experience a sheer wall of merchandise, celebrity apathy, and a legion of hungry comic book artists clamoring for the almighty dollar. It’s a monetary free-for-all that bravely thumbs its nose at today’s economy, presenting a buffet of celluloid heroes and plastic, “Made in China” divinity that demands persistent cash machine attention. Because in space, nobody accepts

Are Fliers Returning to the Skies? There’s Optimism, but it’s Early Yet

Wed, 04/08/2009 - 21:50

We know air passenger traffic is down. That’s why the airlines are holding sale after sale and offering deals, deals, deals . But now Bloomberg has noted that United and American Airlines’ traffic wasn’t down quite so much in March as in the previous month - and that this may mean the travel slump is easing - or as they put it, the results “hint at stabilization in demand after the recession crimped business and leisure trips.” If more and more people do start flying, airlines c

Trip of a Lifetime Alert: Climb Kili With Peter Hillary

Wed, 04/08/2009 - 21:05

Here's a special trip from our friends at National Geographic Expeditions: Climb one of the legendary seven summits of the world with renowned mountaineer Peter Hillary on a special National Geographic Expedition. Soaring above the rippling tea plantations and low hills of northeastern Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro (19,340 feet) is Africa's highest peak. Following the less-traveled Lemosho Route up the western slope, hike nine days through the spectacular landscapes of five temperate zones. On thi

Sacred Valley - Day 3

Wed, 04/08/2009 - 21:00

Due to time restrictions today we couldn’t do the bicycle tour or head into the jungle, which we had hoped to be able to do. That’s not to say we didn’t do some sightseeing, as we did. We ventured just outside Cuzco by bus to the Sacred Valley, which is just north of Cuzco. Our trip through the Sacred Valley, or Valle Sagrado, started by hitting the famous Inca ruins five minutes outside Cuzco named Sacsayhuaman. Using Sacsayhuaman as a fort, the rebellious Manco Inca used it to lay siege to the
